Want to learn more about Las Posadas?
History: a traditional Mexican celebration that takes place over nine nights from December 16 to 24, leading up to Christmas. The word posada means “inn” or “shelter” in Spanish and the event commemorates Mary and Joseph’s search for lodging in Bethlehem before the birth of Jesus. The modern evolutions contains Aztec and Mayan culture fused with the traditions of those early Spanish colonizers, forming one of the most popular holiday events in Mexico and Latin America!
Reenactment procession: Participants dressed as Mary and Joseph or angels and shepherds reenact the nativity story by traveling from station to station singing songs and asking for shelter (posada).
Call and response songs: The group outside sings a traditional song asking for lodging and the people inside respond, at first denying and then eventually offering shelter.
Final stop celebration: Once they are let in there’s a festive celebration with food, pinatas, crafts and live music.
We hope to see you at Jones Center’s La Posada festival- a new tradition begins!
